"Xavier's" New Wheels

Check out the bike Xavier is riding. From afar, it is blue and looks it could be a boy's bike. Get a little closer and you'll see that is is a sparkly metallic blue, adorned with cherries. How did he end up with a girl's bike??? Of course, there is a story...

Recently, my mother-in-law was here in Indy for a conference. On her way back home, she stopped by to see the kids and show us a bike she had won in a raffle. It is a brand new, beautiful bike from a bike shop in Frankfort. The problem? It's a girl's bike. She won it for Aubrey to use a few years from now. No boy's bike was in the raffle. Xavier tried it out and fell in L.O.V.E with it, not caring that is says "Wild Cherry". My MIL was planning to take it home and keep it in her garage, but Xavier just begged her to leave it. We had not bought him a bike yet because this year he could FINALLY ride and steer his tricycle really well. We thought we would wait another year. Now, there is no going back. That tricycle is a thing of the past. We'll just let him ride this bike (which he calls Aubrey's bike) for the rest of the year, then will get him one for his birthday in May.

Did anyone have a bike at 3 or 4? I remember riding my tricycle for a long time. I don't think I had a bike till at least 5 or 6. Did they just not make small bikes like they do now? Regardless, he is stylin' with his sparkles and loves nothing more than riding that bike around the neighborhood.

Oh! Wait till you tell his future wife this story! Better yet threaten to tell his high school friends if he doesn't behave! :-) I rode a big wheel until I got my first bike in first grade - it was a 1960's Schwinn Hollywood in metallic blue - it was awesome! No one had a bike like mine in 1984!
